OK. I have got to get this out of my system. Please, someone, please, show me in the red letter words of Jesus, where he says we should spend time, talents and treasure on worrying about the end of time, and the signs that it is coming. He does tell us some signs, but they are ambiguous. You don’t know. I don’t know. Harold Camping doesn’t know. And we don’t know how exactly either.

What Jesus does say very clearly is this:
“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Matt. 6:34 (NLT)

“But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matt 20:26-28 (NLT)

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.”
Matt 24:36 (NLT)

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’….“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”
Matt. 25:34-36,40 (NLT)

He spends only Chapter 23 telling about end time prophesy, but the whole rest of the Gospel of Matthew tells of Jesus spreading the Gospel, healing people, feeding the hungry, teaching what he expects his disciples to do: the same thing He is doing! He is full of compassion and meeting people where they are at and giving them Good News!

So people, PLEASE, don’t waist any time, talent or treasure trying to figure out when Jesus is coming back. You are to live out everyday as if it were your last. Everyday is a fishing expedition; to be fishers’ of people. The Kingdom is here. Live it. And most importantly-SHARE IT!

And let me ask you one question, and don’t answer quickly. Take a moment.
Do you really TRUST God? I mean, really, really trust Him? If you do, then why would you waste time on this stuff, when you could be doing Kingdom work. Why would you send your money to people who propagate a gospel message that is lacking the real basic but backbone truth of the Gospel: faith without works is dead? Why support that? And are you using your God-given talents to bring people to the Kingdom? Are you doing something, or sitting and watching others?

If you do trust God, and believe all He has to say in Scripture, then you cant wait to see Him, you cant wait for Jesus to come back, BUT at the same time, you want to take as many people as you can with you to Heaven. It doesn’t matter when Jesus returns. Live everyday as it is your last.

And one final thing. Brush up on your history. I get worn out by people telling me how bad things are and how all this bad stuff is a sign of Jesus return. Bad?? More people make more money than ever in history. We are so rich and spoiled it stinks! And I know there have been a lot of natural disasters lately, but we live in an age where we see pictures and reports just moments after they happen.
What do you think people thought during WWII? A second world war within 25 yrs of the first one, and the mass genocide of the Jews, the Atom Bomb, etc. I’m sure most thought that was the end. And what about the great persecution of the Early Church? Nero was nailing them to posts and setting them on fire to light his garden! Thats a great tribulation! And all of the wars, natural disasters, through out history. And things like the black plague. People act like we are the worst because of sex. Not quite. Ask Paul, the apostle. Pretty bad back in his day.

I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. It’s not your fault. Someone got you all worked up over this stuff. But just look at the truth of the Gospel. Look at God’s heart through out all of Scripture. We wants us to love each other and be compassionate…actively. Follow the heart of God. Follow the words and deeds of Jesus. Go make disciples!!

I feel much better. Ahhhh.

Today is Good Friday. The day we remember the crucifixion and bodily death of Jesus Christ. But why did he die? What is the relivence for you and I?

Sadly, the church doesn’t get the real point across anymore. Check me on this. Is it just me, or does it seem that the message of the cross being preached today in most churches is Jesus died for your sins so you can go to Heaven? And is that what you believe?

Before you leave this page, hear me out for a minute. Doesn’t that explanation revolve around you? Once you look at it that way, it should make you a little uneasy. What goes along with that explanation of the cross is even more pathetic. Just say a little prayer after me, and wait to die, go to Heaven, and get a mansion on a street of gold. And oh yes, you should go to church most of the time, cuss less, don’t get drunk as often, throw a couple bucks in the plate, and live the same life you are living now. In fact, if you throw a lot of bucks in the plate, guess what? You are gonna be rich! And don’t worry about sinning any more, because there is this cool thing called grace that makes it not matter! Good for you, huh?

If you read the gospels and the writings of Paul, you will see they mention the Kingdom an awful lot. And kingdoms are about the King. Jesus is the King. He sacrificed himself for you to save you FROM your sin. Why? So you could be justified before God and be made worthy to work in the Kingdom of God. No where is there a magic prayer you say, and go back to life as you knew it. You are to be working through you salvation, as Paul says. You are now disciples, or followers, of Jesus. You are to be a work in progress to become like Him. You are to be willing at any time to jettison the things of this world, including all your wealth, to pick up YOUR cross and follow him. You are to be willing to even lay down your life for Him. You are suppose to be used by Him to bring the Kingdom of God here; now. “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done here on earth as it is in heaven.”

This does NOT mean you have to sell everything and move to Africa. God loves you. He made you to be born where you were. But he wants you to do His will, not yours. Some will be rich, to finance the work in the Kingdom. Some will be led to become poor to minister to the least. And there is everything in-between. But it must, MUST, be a part of a life completely surrendered to Jesus. A life that daily is lived out to do His will. God has always put a high value on taking care of those in need. That is Kingdom work. To plant churches is Kingdom work. To volunteer at church is Kingdom work. To talk to others about your love of Jesus is Kingdom work. To pray for others is Kingdom work. To walk in the gifts of the Spirit is Kingdom work. Why is the Kingdom so important? This is just a temporary gig on Earth, right?

Again, if you look at the Bible, it doesn’t really say that. What Jesus and Paul and John in the book of Revelation talk about is a Kingdom that will be perfect when the new heaven and new earth combine. Jesus implies quite frequently that when the King (Jesus) comes back he will reward those who have done his will, and give them more responsibilities. Also, when there is mention of us getting perfect bodies–what do we need bodies for in Heaven? And did God make all this universe to throw it out?

And what about sin? Are we to continue to sin because we have grace? Paul says NO! We are to continually turn away from sin. That is not to say that we can’t sin or won’t sin. The sacrifice Jesus made on the cross should repulse us away from sin. But also, that sacrifice is perfect, and covers all our sins. Paul wrote his letters addressed to the saints, and told them to stop sinning!

So, back to Jesus on the cross. Yes, He was the perfect, sinless sacrifice for our sins. Anyone who accepts the fact that they are a sinner, and accepts this sacrifice, and is willing to give over to King Jesus their lives, completely, will be given new life. And…the most wonderful gift of all–the Holy Spirit. God himself, living in you. And now we have God in our lives, literally, to move us forward to do the work of the Kingdom. There is no promise of life being easy. But there is a promise of eternal life. And as we grow in our love affair with Christ Jesus, it becomes something we cannot wait to receive…the sight of Him saying…”well done my good and faithful servant.”

I heard this story today on the radio*. A little checking around on the Internet found it to be true.

Mama giraffes give birth standing up. So this means that at the time of birth, the newborn baby giraffe falls 10 feet to the ground. For perspective, that’s about as tall as a basketball hoop to the ground. The baby falls normally on it’s back, and with great difficulty rolls over to lie down there. The mother looks down at the newborn, then positions herself directly over the baby giraffe.

Then, she kicks it! She sends it rolling! Why? Because she wants it to stand up! The baby will struggle and quit trying, and the mother kicks it again. This goes on and on. Then the baby finally gets up! And mom kicks it again, sending it falling. And it struggles and gets up again. Why did she knock it down once it got up? Because she wants the baby giraffe to remember how. She wants those muscles to remember and strengthen.

So what’s in this story for you? Plenty. You see, the mother giraffe does this because in the wild, there are many predators that will kill and eat a baby giraffe. The newborn needs to get up and walking, hiding in the herd. I’m sure the baby has no idea why mom keeps kicking him, and doesn’t enjoy it one bit. It seems hard and tough. It seems like mom doesn’t love him. Hmmm…

Could this be a great analogy of our loving Heavenly Father letting things happen to us that don’t seem so good at the time, but by faith we know are
for our own good? I know I’ve got God’s “hoof prints” on me. I know he has made my spiritual muscles stronger. And I know he has given me my awesome church family to hide me, help me, teach me and grow me. I’m running with the pack, confident in the finish line!

(*story from “Turning Point w/ David Jeremiah”)

A few days ago I lost a friend I have never met. A pastor I had never spoken to. Our lives began to intersect, but his was cut short by a bullet. It’s strange grieving a stranger.

Pastor Darrell Franklin was a bi-vocational pastor, like myself. He ran a local business, which God had prospered. The story goes that yesterday, Pastor Darrell had an altercation with an employee and friend of his. This person left, and came back with a gun, killing Pastor Darrell. He then took his own life. Violence in the Workplace—Murder/Suicide.

Pastor Darrell Franklin led Trinity Baptist Church, north of Madisonville, TN. My son Jeremi, who led me to Jesus 11 yrs. ago started attending there with his family. 11 years ago Jeremi was preaching and on fire for the Lord. But he had fallen away, and been through a lot of dark, bad things. But just a few months ago, he started going to Trinity, and loved Pastor Darrell. And Pastor Darrell took a real interest in him. And then suddenly, Pastor Darrell was gone; struck down by someone he knew.

Jeremi called to tell me what happened that afternoon. He was really shook, but seemed to stand strong on the Word. We talked, we hung up. A few minutes later, the phone rang again-same number. This time it was Kylie, Jeremi’s 3 yr old step daughter. She had hit redial. She’s an angel, and has seen so much suffering already. We babble for a minute, then she says “My preacher died. Mommy’s crying.”
So all the questions and doubt begin. “Why God? Why now?” I went up to Trinity that night, and wept and grieved with people I never met, over a man I never met. God reminded me that He had ordained this day at the same time He ordained the day of Pastor Darrell’s birth. He made clear He had not been asleep or negligent when Pastor Darrell was killed. And my tiny seed of faith would see me and Jeremi thru this.

And so it did. God’s Word says faith is a gift, and I know that is true. I would never have had faith that this would work out. And don’t get me wrong. I know the Franklin family is still reeling from the shock and horror of it all. But they had a great pastor, husband, father and spiritual leader, who taught them about the Kingdom. And they will get to see the fruit of his life. A life dedicated to Jesus and the Gospel. And Jeremi and Leada are some of that fruit.

Here are the 21 steps to insanity.

Ordering DSL can be tricky. At the time I ordered (June,2010), Business DSL was not on the AT&T website. You had to go to BellSouth.com, a company AT&T bought out years before. I still had to call, because no pricing was on the website. The sales lady presented the pricing, and I chose the lowest cost package -Their DSL Lite, for only $19.95/mo. We then talked about installation. All I needed was a jack put in, as the building we were moving into had no jacks where we needed them. The definitions and terminology are important. I want a jack installed. That’s running a line to AT&T. Installation to AT&T is plugging a modem into an existing jack, plugging a wire to you computer, and setting up the computer. I told her what I needed and she put in installation. She then concluded by saying that I would be receiving a contract by email that needed to be signed, and returned to get the $19.95 price. I got emails, but no contract.

The service man came out, and we had to dance around the word “install”. All I want is a jack, right here” I said. “But the paperwork says to install the DSL, not run a line and jack”, he says. Eventually it gets done.

I get the first snail mail from AT&T. A bill for the line run. Over $125!!! I call. Oops, a mistake. Somehow, no one knows how, I got charged for 5 lines. So the bill drops to around $25. I ask about the contract. They’ll send it.

I get the first bill for DSL- over $400!!!!!!! I call again. The bill has no monthly discount to $19.95. Instead-$59.95/mo. It has an installation charge. The service man just ran the line, not “install”. They say it is because I didn’t sign a contract. “I can’t sign a contract you never sent!” They say they will sent it to me today, and then issue credits. They do sent the contract. I receive it, sign it, and send it back the same day.

I call back and verify they received it, and to find out how much the credits are. They reply they got it but don’t know about the credits yet. They want me to pay the $400 bill. Right. Not gonna happen.

I get my next bill. It has about $250 in credits. I call. I want to know how they came to this figure, because by my calculations, it should be more. No one, and I do mean no one knows. Just trust them. OK.

I go online to pay my bill. I am done arguing and spending hours on the phone. I enter the info, and hit the submit button. I think I’ve paid my bill. In fairness and hindsight, I should have realized I didn’t get an email from them saying I paid it, and didn’t check my bank to see it cleared…because it didn’t. I get a phone call to pay my bill. I said I did. She says how. I tell her. Well, maybe it hasn’t cleared yet. OK. Well, they turn off the DSL. I now check with the bank, and sure enough, it never got paid. So I pay it. They turn it on.

I have paid over $200, for 7 months of $19.95/mo. service. I get my next bill-19.95. First time I see a bill for only $19.95. The next bill is $59.95. Guess what? I call. They tell me I have broken my contract by being turned off, so now I get the regular price.

HERE’S WHERE IT GETS BETTER- On their website (att.com), I had signed in to my account. On the home page of Account Summary, it has all my account info, and a link that says “change plan”. Now remember, I am signed into my account, that only has my DSL Lite plan. So I have a plan, and want to change it, right? CHANGE PLAN. So I click on it, and it takes me directly to a page that has DSL 6.0 for $27.49/mo for 12 mo.

So I ask about upgrading to 6.0 DSL. The lady says, sorry that’s only for new customers. I tell her about the website, to no avail. I ask how much is it for me to upgrade. She transfers me to a salesperson, who tells me $44.95/mo. OK. I’ll do it. She takes all my info. I ask how long it will take. “about a week” she replies. This is Wednesday January 26th. I make plans for a special event at our church for SuperBowl Sunday, February 6th.

I get no email thanking me for the order. Hmmmm. I wait until Monday to call and check. “Nope, we show no order for an upgrade”. ARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!! I am finally done. I want to cancel. Now. I get transferred to the cancellation department. She tells me I will have to pay a cancellation fee, because I am under contract. What? I get charged full $59.95 price because I broke the contract, but now it’s in effect?? I tell her this long, horrible story. She say OK, I’ll let you out without a fee. It will take one to two days to get turned off. Thank you!

During this mess, I e-mail customer service about the glitch in the link on the website, so they could fix it. I got a reply back that says “if you want the $27.49 deal, cancel your DSL and then order it online”. Nice

A few more days pass. We have never been disconnected, nor have I got any emails. I call again. Guess what? They don’t have my cancellation shown anywhere. (picture nuclear explosion). I get no help or compassion.

I now want the $27.49 DSL 6.0. I think I’ve earned it. I call 9 times. My call gets dropped twice (thanks to AT&T wireless). I talk to some of the rudest people I have ever met. I want $27.49/mo., or no penalty cancellation. I want a supervisor. Everyone says no.

I keep calling. I finally get an angel. She listens to me. She goes to bat for me. The best she can do is cancel me without charges. That’s fine. She even issues me a credit for the two months I was billed $59.95 instead of $19.95. I didn’t even ask. That was awesome. I have her name and email address. She was fantastic.

THE FINALE- I must be sadistic. I now want to take advantage of AT&T. Kind of “make them pay”. So what do I do? I go to the website, and order the $27.49 DSL. I know, I know- what the heck am I thinking?? I do it. I get an email, that says I must do an advance payment because of my payment history with AT&T (go figure). $215, OR- $115 if I sign up for Autopay. So I send back the following reply- “We DO wish to sign up for Autopay, to pay the $115 advance payment. Use the payment information below for the advance payment and the Autopay”…

Of course Mildred (the lady in charge) somehow misreads it. Don’t ask me, I have no idea. So they take $215 instantly, but can’t credit the $100 back for a week.
The pain continues. Mildred has never done Autopay before. The method of payment I have chosen can’t be used for that (only to instantly zap money out before you get DSL). They need a credit card #. Oh, OK, let me give you more ways to rob me.
She has set up the “installation for 2/10 between 8-11am. I take off work and patiently wait. At 10:30 I start calling my girl Mildred. She is too busy so I leave messages. I call tech support. I reach a guy who really seems to know what he’s doing. There is a problem-it’s not really scheduled, and couldnt be done until they flip some switches on their end.

Three DSL modems in less than a year.

I now (Oct. 2011) add a voice line. I ask for a specific number, which will be changed tomorrow. Tomorrow comes and goes. I call, no one knows about it. So a week later I order business cards with the number I have, so I dont have to talk to ATT anymore. The day after the cards arrive, two weeks after ordering the phone, the number changes.

Then I get my first bill, which is $220.00 dollars instead of $100. They have taken off my discount for the DSL.

I call to cancel the whole thing. They will do it, but there will be cancellation charges on the contract for the discounted DSL, even though it aint discounted anymore. They wont discuss those fees, because they cant see how much they are. Once I get a bill for them, then i can dispute them.
Does it ever end?
DO NOT GET AT&T DSL!!! IT WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!

I have to write through this experience. I will be updating this regularly, as I wrestle with God and my feelings.

6/10/10

The world changed yesterday. It got knocked off it’s axis. I knew what had happened. I thought I knew what to expect. But nothing prepared me.

Two weeks ago, a 2 year old little girl I only knew by name (Kylie), walked into the bedroom of a 5 year old girl she knew and trusted. Somehow, the 5 year old, playing with a lighter, set a blanket and pillow on fire. Kylie was trapped behind the fire and fell into it trying to escape, setting her shirt on fire. This was not some evil, malicious adult, but a 5 year old who didn’t know what would happen. Little Kylie ended up with 3rd degree burns over 30% of her body (mainly her chest and torso). She was life-flighted to UT Medical Center, and then the Shriners sent a jet to Knoxville to pick her up and take her to Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati, where the best doctors and nurses in the world treat burned children.

She was in critical condition in ICU, on a ventilator. They had to change her bandages 3 times a day, and keep them wet with medicine to prevent infection. The kept her drugged and asleep so she wouldn’t feel the pain. The prayers went up from the saints to the ear of God, and His mercy and grace poured out. She improved much faster than the doctors expected. They thought they would have to keep her out with drugs for 2 weeks. 5 days later she was able to stay awake. Skin graphs came sooner. And Jesus was with her through it all.

I have had a picture of her on my phone since this happened, that was taken just a few days before this tragedy. I have some other pictures sent that were sent to me that showed her in bed, both soon after arriving in Cinci, and after her eyes opened. Now it was my turn to go up and visit, and pray.

Yesterday, we were blessed that we got there just in time for her first visit to the playroom, the first journey out of her room. She was in a wheelchair/bed, and she had a pretty pink dress on over all her bandages, and a pink hat. Her arms have splints on them so she can’t bend them or move them much.

We (my wife Barb and I) had brought my son Jeremi back up from Tennessee, and she lit up when she saw him. He had been gone about 8 days to take care of things back home. She laughed and talked. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. All around us were other burned children, having fun together, most with their parents right there. To understand that Kylie was lucky, compared to the other children there, was overwhelming. Most were there due to accidents. But some were there due to inhuman abuse and pure evil. But the Spirit of the Lord was there. You could feel Him. And these superheroes that work there showed more godly (agapé) love than I have ever seen.

After a while it was time to return to her room. She didn’t want to leave, but she was getting tired. After getting settled in, she ate a little applesauce, which Jeremi fed her. But now comes the most painful, moving thing I have ever witnessed. As Barb and I watched, Jeremi and Kylie’s mom Leada held Kylie’s hands, and sang to her, as she had her bandages changed. To see first hand all the damage done to such a sweet, precious child, and watch her parents not shed a tear as they calmed her. I don’t know how they measure 30% of her body, but the extent of the burns were overwhelming. Kylie cried, but never fought or struggled. It was the bravest, most heroic action I have ever seen, and it came from a 2 year old. The nurses said she does better than anyone else at bandage changing time. Most fight and wrestle. I was sick, feeling the deepest sadness and pain I have ever felt. But I had to be there and see. I could not stick my head in the sand and not live in Kylie’s reality. She saw it. I needed to know the beginning, and pray through for God’s healing grace and mercy.

One of the nurses told us she had been a patient at Shriner’s when she was 17, and had been burned over 60% of her body. Now she’s giving back as a nurse, who can relate to what these kids are going through. These nurses love these kids. I don’t know how they do it. The love of Jesus must live deep in them.

After Kylie calmed down, we all prayed together. I have never had so much faith, or so much desire, to see God’s provision for this little girl. I believe He has been with her through all this; He has accelerated her healing, and He is going to do some remarkable things with her.

At the end of the day, I was so changed. Nothing else seems to have the value it once did. Nothing else seems important. I had seen the fallenness of man and the flesh, and seen the glory of God in a little 2 year old girl, and those who take care of her. I have seen parents sacrifice their own feelings and emotions for their child in a way I can only hope I would do if I was in there shoes. And all the things I used to think about Shriner’s- their secrets and rituals-all seem stupid. They have shown what the church SHOULD be doing- taking care of families in deep need. All Kylie’s care, now and until she is 21, is free, first class, and done with love. Her parents, and us, have been put up for free. No questions, just love. Now, new buildings, projectors, stuff… seem so trivial. I will never ever forget this experience.

I wrestled with sleep last night. Feeling like I should do something (the codependent in me). I want to take her pain. I want to take those burns, and bare them for her. I want to help this hospital. And so, I pray. And pray. The best thing I can do. And cry.

6/11/10

Yesterday Kylie got taken off all the opiate meds. She was pretty grumpy all day. Most likely from withdrawals and dealing with the pain. She also started walking. She doessn’t really like it all that much. It hurts. But she walks a short distance twice a day. She needs to start eating, so they can take the feeding tube out. She did get her IV taken out also yesterday. They staple these things to her. Amazing.

I started this rant yesterday, and feel better for it. I also sent an email to the National Vineyard Office, and they sent it out to all the Vineyards in the US. All day yesterday and today, I’ve been receiving emails from Vineyards around the country. All praying for little Kylie. So much encouragement. I beat myself up for a while for not doing that before, but then I started thinking about all the attributes of God. I know He is timeless. He knows I needed the encouragement now, and He can answer our prayers no matter when we pray them. And by the way, please pray for all the children up at Shriner’s. There are some who have no one there with them.

I love what the Shriner’s are doing. I am still bothered that the church isn’t doing this. But I really thankful that someone is doing it, and we are giving God the glory.

6/12/10

We are back in Athens. It is so hard to get back to “everyday life”. I went to work, but just wanted it to be over. I spent all my free time updating this blog, putting up video and pictures of Kylie, and praying. Praying to the point of not even knowing what to say anymore, but trusting the Holy Spirit to pray for me. The emails are still coming in from all over, and they bring me such peace, knowing all these people are praying. I must try today to get “life” done today. But this will never be far from my heart. Forgive me if you see me, and I begin to weep. I haven’t been able to stop it.

“I don’t need to go to church to worship God.” How many times have you and I heard that? And it, by itself is a true statement. The whole idea of being a Christian is to have a deep, meaningful, everyday relationship with God. So I hope and pray that every person who calls themselves a Christian, or in some way sees themselves as following Jesus, would worship Him, read His book, pray to Him, and listen to Him. Every day. A lot. But there is so much more!

You can be in a relationship with Him, but it’s almost impossible to live out what He teaches on your own. Jesus never sent out his disciples alone. He always sent them out in groups. He always had people around Him. The Acts Church was not a commune, but a gathering of people who shared what they had. It was a community. The Bible was meant to to discussed and talked about; to ask questions, and listen to others opinions. It is impossible to interpret the Bible (and it does need interpreting) without this fellowship.

One of the most important advantages to community is to hold each other accountable. The story of Ananias and Sapphira in the book of Acts is about being held accountable. When they spoke a lie to their community that knew the truth, God acted.

Many people look at the divisions and hypocracy of “church people” and don’t want anything to do with church because of that.
We have over 1500 Christian denominations in this country alone. We need to be able to agree on the important things, like Jesus, the cross, the resurrection and salvation, and be able to let go of our differences. Then, those outside wlll WANT to come in.

Also, we, as followers of Jesus, need to be together with someone “driving the bus”. Bus drivers (pastors and leaders) are suppose to go where they are told by dispatch (God). Some people have to make a decision whether they are going to get on the bus and go where the bus (church) is going. But if the bus is empty, the driver needs to call dispatch! But generally, he is to keep order and drive because he has the vision. But without the riders wanting to go where God wants them to go, he is out of a job. Getting on a bus involves taking a risk. But never taking a risk is being fill dirt.

To my church family:

The last few months have been such an incredible adventure. Watching the church grow, and seeing not only more bodies, but people hungry for God, and wanting to really live out their salvation. To extend grace and mercy to the least, the last, the lost, and the lonely of the world.

I have the honor to know them. To call them friends. And the ultimate privilege to teach them, and be taught by them. This incredible group of people from all over the US, who have come together to form the closest family I have ever had.

As I look to the future with great hope and anticipation, I pray for protection for this church family. As we conform more to the will of God, I know the enemy will try to divide and conquer. He will try his best to defeat this holy union. We must remain strong and committed, and bent in constant prayer.

I love you all. You have my word that I will do my best to live out what I believe Scripture says and what God is saying. Each of you plays a very distinct role in the Athens Vineyard. This is your church. Jesus Body, with you being an active, vital member. What you do each and every day MATTERS! Random acts of kindness, mentioning the Name of Jesus to a seeker, loving others.

Let’s move on together, building a framework for others and future generations to build on and cling to. Always remembering Jesus’ announcement into ministry:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” (Luke 4:18-19, NLT)

This is our job description. Let’s Roll!

Sometimes you get more than you ask for!

“One day at three o’clock in the afternoon, Peter and John were on their way into the Temple for prayer meeting. At the same time there was a man crippled from birth being carried up. Every day he was set down at the Temple gate, the one named Beautiful, to beg from those going into the Temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter the Temple, he asked for a handout. Peter, with John at his side, looked him straight in the eye and said, “Look here.” He looked up, expecting to get something from them. Peter said, “I don’t have a nickel to my name, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!” He grabbed him by the right hand and pulled him up. In an instant his feet and ankles became firm. He jumped to his feet and walked.” Acts 3:1-8 (Message)

This man wasn’t looking for healing. He was just doing what he did everyday - beg for money. It says everyday, at the temple gate called beautiful, he was put there by others. Sounds like he was doing this for a while. If that’s true, he was sitting there when Jesus was at the Temple two months prior. Jesus may have seen him. He may have walked right past him.

But it was for such a time as this! This man’s spirits were down. It says his eyes were down. Life long cripple begging for handouts. The Nazarene who was healing all kinds of people, didn’t heal him. But this day, asking for a coin, God gave him better. Can you imagine how skinny and useless his legs looked, then suddenly…they’re strong and working!

We often aren’t looking for God. We aren’t looking for His intervention in our lives. We just want to get thru the day. Some of us may even think God has passed us by. But He just might show up when you least expect it, looking like a fisherman. Or a truck driver, restaurant worker or barber. And giving way more than you could ever ask for.
